There could be many reasons why cysts form on the ovaries. Some cysts are simple functional cysts that form as a result of the normal ovulation process while other cysts are related to having polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS or cancer. The first step is to get proper diagnosis. Once you know which type of cysts you have then you can start thinking about treatment. What is a functional ovarian cyst? An ovarian cyst is a sac called a follicle containing fluid or semi-solid materials that develop in or on the ovary. This type of cyst is more common in women in their childbearing years and tend to resolve naturally without any form of intervention. Research has shown that many woman have simple cysts develop in or on their ovaries and don't even know it. This is because most simple cysts will dissolve naturally within a few months and never cause the woman any sort of pain or discomfort. Why do cysts form in the first place? Most cysts form as a result of a woman's monthly ovulation cycle. Every month one of the ovaries releases a follicle. This follicle is known as the corpus luteum and it houses an egg. During ovulation, the follicle releases this egg, and the egg travels through the fallopian tube into the womb where it is either fertilised or shed as part of a woman's normal monthly cycle. The corpus luteum then dissolves away naturally and the whole process starts all over again. Occasionally the corpus luteum does not dissolve as it should, but closes up on itself retaining its contents and begins to grow. Eventually it gets so big it begins to cause the woman pain, especially when it twists on itself. What are the different types of cysts? Apart from the simple cysts other types of cysts include dermoid, hemorrhagic, and endometriomas (also commonly known as chocolate cysts). What are the common symptoms of Ovarian Cysts? There are many symptoms including. 1. Constant or intermittent dull ache that radiates to your lower back and thighs, 2. Pelvic pain during intercourse, 3. Pressure in your rectum or bladder and difficulty emptying your bladder completely 4. Painful menstrual period 5. Abnormal bleeding. What can you do to get rid of cysts on the ovaries? The way to get rid of the cysts will greatly depend on what type of cyst it is. Simple recurring functional cyst (which is what 80% of most women have) can be treated using natural and holistic methods. More complex cysts like the dermoid may have to be surgically removed.
